TAKING IT BACK IN STYLE

April 6, 2018

Are you ready to take it back and boogie down? The ‘Motown & More Dance Party” hosted by the Mon-Bijou Center and KGP Virgin Islands promises to take you back in style!  Cie Lloyd, Director of the Mon-Bijou Community Center, and George Armstrong Jr., Founder & CEO of local marketing firm KGP Virgin Islands, have teamed up again to bring us a power house event! “This is going to be an amazing experience. It’s all live: the band, the music and the dancing. There are no computers. It’s the works!" said Mr. Armstrong. The ‘Motown & More Dance Party’ will feature local Virgin Islands artists impersonating the greatest of the greats. The 15 acts include Mada Nile as Dionne Warrick, Gyasi Clarke as Al Greene, China Black as Older Michael Jackson, Cherise King as Jennifer Holiday and Kevin Faktor as Lionel Richie, to name a few. The Mon-Bijou Community Center’s famous Young, Gifted & Talented Band (Y.G.T) will serve as the house band for the night. “We have door prizes for the best dressed 60s-80s outfit. There will even be a Soul Train Line during the middle of the show for people to literally “Get up out of your seat and boogie down” on stage!” said Mr. Armstrong.

The show takes place this at 7 p.m. Saturday April 7 at Reading Rainbow. Tickets are $10 and $15 at the door and you can get them at One Love Service Stations, In the Mix, and Yolanda’s Salon. There will be a cash-bar and food for sale by In the Mix and the Palms at Pelican Cove Catering.

KGPVI and MBCC hope that the event will bring together the older and younger generations. “What’s different about this show is that we wanted to highlight the idea that today’s generation can reflect on the past generations. We are blending the generations to show that we are still one. Adults think we can’t reflect on the times when they used to have fun. So, we created a time machine to take everyone back and show that younger generations can visit this period in history, have fun with it, and still be creative in the present day. For example, Alis Forte is a 6-year-old singer who will be impersonating the young Michael Jackson!” explained Mr. Armstrong.

Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Armstrong have high standards for each program they produce and ‘Motown & More’ is no exception. “When we started in January we required that all participants research the person they would be impersonating and look at the music and the clothing of this historic period. The singers had to go back and gather the right words to sing, the musicians to learn the chords of the music and actually practice using footage of the artists performing live,” said Mr. Armstrong. “The band has been practicing since the beginning of February and the we’ve been working 3 days a week in March to get everything working smoothly,” he added.

KGP VI and The Mon Bijou Community Center continues to work successfully work with local entertainers. Over 700 Virgin Islanders attended ‘Touch 2017’, an event that was held twice in December that starred local singers, rappers, comedians and poets. Last week, over 300 Virgin Islanders attended ‘Follow the Flow’, an event held at Legacy Lounge which featured local hip-hop artists.

“I hope that the entire Virgin Islands comes out to support our local artists,” said Mr. Armstrong. Given their record of providing outstanding entertainment, creating beautiful experiences and executing them smoothly, the ‘Motown & More Dance Party’ is sure to be well-attended and nothing short of exquisite!
